I'd like to give a shout out to my good friend, sax player extrordinaire, Michael Ghegan, who I've had the great pleasure to work and tour extensively with on the Keiko Matsui gigs.

Michael's an amazing sax man and multi-talented instrumentalist and composer.  Check out his music on his website here:  www.michaelghegan.com and his myspace page here:  myspace.com/michaelghegan.  I had the opportunity to play on a couple of his tunes on his self-titled CD, Michael Ghegan, which is available here on CDBaby

I encourage everyone to support exceptional indie music artists like Michael Ghegan by purchasing his CD and while you're shopping for music, I hope you'll pick up one or more of my CD's too!

As always, check my Calendar Page  for additional info.

Wishing all of you Peace, Love & Music!

Updated March 16, 2007

Just added some new shows for March with Akiko/Firebird999 -- see my Calendar Page or scroll down for dates, times & venues!

I’m back in San Diego after spending three weeks working on the Norwegian Sun Cruise in the Caribbean.  While working a Caribbean Cruise Ship Gig sounds like an idyllic scenario and it was fun, it was also serious work – playing seven days a week.   Nevertheless, I had a great time.

I met a lot of interesting people and received positive feedback from the “cruisers” on the boat – they loved the music.  I look forward to working on future cruises.

When not playing on the boat, I had an opportunity to jam with a Caribbean band in Belize.  That was a kick.

While in Cozumel, I met Jose Orea, an exciting progressive rock guitarist.  We traded some guitar techniques and talked about the music scene in Mexico, etc.  We’re kicking around some ideas regarding recording a CD at his studio in Mexico.  I’ll keep you posted.  You can check out Jose at his website: www.joseorea.com or on his MySpace page at: http://www.myspace.com/joseorea.

I’d like to thank my dear friend, Clarolyn Maier for hooking me up for the cruise.  Clarolyn is an incredibly talented singer and harpist.

From her bio:

"Clarolyn has performed for the likes of Quincy Jones, Leonard Bernstein, Henry Mancini, Michael Feinstein, Elizabeth Taylor, Leslie Bricusse, Frank Sinatra Jr., Roger Moore, and has opened for the jazz great Dianne Schur. Clarolyn continues to perform nationwide and internationally in top venues as a seasoned jazz and Broadway vocalist.

Her albums, “Sessions” and “Standard Departures”, have received rave reviews in national publications(Time Out New York, Billboard, LA Jazz Scene). They feature her moving and powerful vocals adorned by her innovative, and jazzy, Harp performance. Both CD's present a star-studded cast of musicians.

You can listen to (and buy) Clarolyn's music from her CD "Sessions" at CDBaby.com  that "features music ranging from the most beloved of jazz classics to the best of Broadway and cabaret. Listeners are taken directly into her recording session featuring some of the finest musicians in the business. The album has the exceptional feature of including some of the fascinating jam session dialogue between the players. Legendary harpist/pianist Corky Hale joins Clarolyn on the hauntingly beautiful Johnny Mercer standard, "I Remember You."

Clarolyn's smooth, heartfelt vocals are embraced by legendary talents like George Gaffney (longtime accompanist to Sarah Vaghn) and Earl Palmer (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honoree and jazz legend) on some rich and upbeat jazz classics; and Windham Hill artist, pianist Tom Grant's expansive interpretation of the sultry "But Beautiful." And of course, several tracks feature the celestial (and world-renowned) harp-playing of Clarolyn herself. "

Now that I’m back on terra firma, through March, you can find me on most Fridays and Saturdays peforming my solo acoustic Flamenco music at La Gran Tapa but either call ahead or check my Tour & Performance Calendar here on MySpace as well as on my web site as I may have other gigs that pre-empt those days (which I've noted below).

Dizzy’s is described as “…a place to experience musical performance; a place with no distractions no bar scene, no TVs, no restaurant, no hidden agendas . . . no limits . . . All ages always welcome.

I hope those of you in the San Diego area will come to the shows with Akiko/Firebird999.  She’s a very captivating recording artist as noted in her bio on her site

"California's Akiko, is an artist who would drive all the industry label-crazed people up the wall. A native of Japan, Akiko is quickly developing a reputation as one of the West Coast's most interesting performers by offering something new and innovative to audiences who are accustomed to the sometimes formulaic brand of today's popular music.

Akiko, located in San Diego, wants to be defined by her unique view of both life and music. She is inspired by the beauty that she finds in everyday life: "I am moved by the many elements of nature, such as the wind from the ocean, the blue sky, the stars, and the moon." This appreciation of nature works its way into her music and lyrics. Her songs have an earthy feel to them, and cause listeners to feel as though they are somehow floating. Her voice is warm and inviting.  Akiko is aware that her style is hard to define, and is looking forward to more people discovering something in the music that is "very natural and not in the usual mold of what is out there."

All signs are pointing in the direction of Akiko's inevitable success. Her current CD, 'Symphony', is for sale, and has already received much praise. The first track, entitled 'Moon Love', was recently high on several lists as one of the more popular songs in the World genre. Another song, 'For Beautiful You', has made its way into several top 20 lists in the instrumental genre. Proving her cross-genre appeal, Akiko's collaborative work with Ptrak is also in the top 20 on a couple of pop-oriented lists."

Look forward to seeing you at the shows!

Updated February 11, 2007

Hope your holidays were terrific and that this New Year brings all of us alot of great energy, joy and peace!

Just added iTunes and EMusic download links which will appear on the left hand margin of each of my web pages (for now, just on this home page).  I  should have more download links including the new SNOCAP MySpace download links which will soon be available here and on my MySpace page.

I've been busy lining up performance dates for 2007 and I'll be updating the Tour & Performance Schedule Calendar and also my MySpace page. as future dates are booked and confirmed so be sure to check back.

Just wrapped a solo performance at Hawthorn's in San Diego on Friday, February 9.  Great place with excellent food and ambience.

On Saturday, Febrary 10, I flew to New Orleans and today I'll be boarding Norwegian Cruise Lines Caribbean Cruise ship “The Sun” for the next three weeks (February 12 – March 4) where I'll be making three trips around the Caribbean.  Yes, I know, it’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it.

I’ll be performing my solo Flamenco guitar repertoire in The Sun’s “Las Ramblas Tapas Bar & Restaurant.”

The 7 day Caribbean Sun Cruise starts in New Orleans and stops at the following ports:

  • Costa Mayo - - -  Site of the mysterious and unexcavated Mayan ruins of famous Chacchoben.
  • Santo Tomas De Castilla
  • Belize City - - -  More Mayan ruins at ancient site of Altun Ha, famous for its nine-and-a-half pound jade head of the sun god Kinich Ahau.  There’s also a spectacular  barrier reef comprised of a variety of coral formations teaming with an amazing variety of tropical fish.  You can take a 70 foot high swing through the jungle tree tops or go underground and explore crystalline formations in it’s many caves .  Even more amazing is this place, that offers so much in the way of natural beauty and ancient wonder, has only one brand of beer!
  • Cozumel - - - Underwater and above ground spectacles like the ocean architecture at Dos Ojos Caves and the Tulim Mayan Ruins.
  • Then it’s back to New Orleans – just in time for Mardi Gras!

I should be back in San Diego March 4th or 5th.  If you need to reach me, those of you who have my cell number can call me direct and leave me a message if I don't pick up.  Otherwise, please leave a message on my business line at 310-302-1909 or click on the following link to email me HERE and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

In January, I sat in and played at The Annual Robert Burns Supper (celebrating Scotland's national bard, Robert Burns), with local San Diego namesake and bagpiper, Robert Burns, at the Mission Valley Hotel & Convention Center.   Here's a blurb from one the Robert Burns Club websites:

The last Burns Supper was held on January 27, 2007 with a feast at a traditional Scottish banquet complete with haggis, Burns' poetry and song, highland bagpiping and drumming, highland dancing, ballroom dancing, and a door prize and raffle.  The entertainers for the evening included Helix Highlanders Pipe Band, highland-dance troupe Highland Fusion accompanied by piper Robert Burns, general dance band Our Song, Jeanne McDougall of Scottish folk band Westlin Weavers giving the traditional Immortal Memory with song, and a guest appearance by virtuoso Flemenco guitarist Alberto de Almar.

This was the first time I'd played with a Scottish bagpiper.  And while the concept of Flamenco Guitar and Scottish Bagpipes might boggle the mind, it's not as much of a stretch as one might think.

As it turns out, the bagpipes have an illustrious history throughout Europe, including Spain where the Spanish bagpipe, the Gaita (gaita do fole), is predominantly featured in the music of the Galacia, Asturias and Cantabria regions of Northern Spain.  More info on Galacian music and the Gaita can found here:  Spanish Bagpipes and here: Music of Galacia.

My December and January solo performances at
La Gran Tapa in San Diego on various Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays were also great. Thanks to all of you who stopped by.

I performed with the young and talented Jasmine Trias (3rd place finalist on Amerian Idol) at the Sycuan Resort & Casino on December 14 & 15.  It was fun to play outside of my musical norm of Flamenco and Latin/Jazz Fusion and play some contemporary pop music.

I had a lot of fun playing with El Douje and Fishtank Ensemble in December and hope to do it again.  Great performers, exciting music and a lot of fun!  If you get a chance to see one of their shows, don't miss it!

Updated Dec 8, 2006
Last week traveled to South Africa for a performance with Keiko Matsui on Dec. 2, got back Monday the 4th and headed back down to San Diego with El Douje to play with him and Fishtank Ensemble at Twiggs in San Diego on Tuesday, the 5th.

Thoughout December and January, I'll be playing two shows -- 6:00pm and 10:00pm at
La Gran Tapa in San Diego on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.  Come by and enjoy some great food, drink and Flamenco music.

You can find more details on the
Tour & Performance Schedule Calendar and also on my MySpace page.

Updated Nov 1, 2006
We just migrated the web site to a new host and sever and updated the format of the site including adding links to purchase my CD's from cdbaby.com.  Click on a CD cover and it will take you directly to that CD on cdbaby.com.  I'll be adding more content as well as links to music downloading services like iTunes where you can purchase individual songs.  We're still renovating the site, but keep checking back for news, photos, merchandise and tour and gig updates!

I'm headed up to Seattle to perform with Keiko Matsui.  We'll be performing from November 2 to November 5 at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley  (206- 441-9729).  Hope those of you in Seattle will come and see the show and say hello.

In October, I traveled to Japan to do a show on the 21st with Keiko in Tsuruga.  For future dates with Keiko Matsui and other upcoming gigs, be sure to check the Tour & Performance Schedule Calendar .

Recently set up a page on My Space at:   www.myspace.com/albertodealmar.  Stop by and add yourself to my friend's list to receive news and updates.
2006 has been another great year and 2007 is already lining up with shows from San Diego, CA to New York, NY and Japan to South Africa!  Like previous years, I'm blessed with the good fortune to get to do what I love -- creating and playing music that I hope brings joy and inspiration into the lives of people I've been fortunate to perforrm with and for all over the world.

I love touring and the opportunities to spend time exploring the cities, experiencing the diverse cultural aspects and connecting with amazing, engaging, kind and generous people through our shared love of music.  I look forward to continuing to tour around the world and meeting up with fans and old friends and making new ones.

I hope that 2006 has been a good year to each of you and that 2007 will be even better and bring peace, love and joy to all of us around world.
